Gypsy Blood - Kristy Cunning
Kristy Cunning's All the Pretty Monsters series is great, I'm currently re-reading it so I'll start off with book one. I think she did a fantastic job with this series. It's well thought out, unique and entertaining.
This story revolves around Violet, or January Violet Carmine. Violet is a twenty-five year old gypsy woman who after finding out her mother just died and left her everything in a small town called Shadow Hills moves to take over her mothers Gypsy Magic business, making healing potions as well as recreational "gypsy spice", and a bunch of other things. Violet is many things, a Portacle Gypsy being only one of those things, she has many secrets and layers to her that we very slowly begin to learn in book one, Gypsy Blood. At her mother's wake, where she's the only one in attendance Violet meets her ghost best friend Anna who literally enters riding her mothers casket wearing nothing but some lacy red underwear and becomes my favorite character in this series for her quick wit, and dark and twisted sense of humor.
After moving into town, slowly setting up her shop, trying to figure out how her mother was killed and trying to find a way to stop the "final decay" on Anna (basically a second death for ghosts where they slowly loose their sanity and eventually turn into a pile of salt), Violet attracts the attention of three heartbreakingly handsome men, who can't quite figure out the mystery that is January Violet Carmine.
Book one is the slowest out of all the books, were introduced to a lot of key characters in this book and slowly get a feel for the complicated plot. There's a lot of information and gems in this book, I seriously had to read it again and I still don't get some of it. Even with all the round-abouts and beating around the bush it all ties well together in a neat little bow in the end. So if you're reading this book and feel a little overwhelmed just hang in there. Its a lot to process but its so worth it.
This is a story about monsters, of vampires and werewolves. Of Van Helsing's and sexual deviants. Its so well thought out and complex that you really have to pay attention to everything going on in this book. Even the little things, the characters have a way of distracting and leading you around in circles before you really get any good information, but the author does this in such a way that it sucks you in and has you wanting more.
This book has everything, sexy monsters, dark humor, twisted romance, a intricate back story and a strong female lead. I loved this series, hence the reason I'm reading it again. I didn't even realize that Kristy Cunning also wrote the Dark Side series as well until I started writing this review. If you haven't read that series I strongly recommend it as well as this one.
